James Lange

James Lange, Ph.D. is an internationally recognized researcher in the Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) abuse field. Dr. James Lange is San Diego State University’s Coordinator of AOD Initiatives, and an internationally recognized researcher in the field of Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) abuse prevention. He has authored over 60 peer reviewed and scholarly scientific publications, and made over 120 conference presentations both in the U.S. and abroad.  His research studies have been funded through State, Federal and Foundation grants. He was selected by the U.S. National Institutes of Health to be one of five research scientists to assist with their Rapid Response to College Binge Drinking research initiative.       Dr. Lange has conducted in person and online training to professionals on hot topics within the field, including: alcohol and other drug prevention, emerging drugs, medical marijuana, prescription drug abuse, impaired driving, research design, and survey methods. He developed an award winning strategic framework for comprehensive prevention that has been adopted or adapted by several universities and state college systems.  A number of his studies have been featured in major news and information outlets, including: the Journal of the American Medical Association News, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, CNN, Fox News, National Public Radio, and the BBC.  His recent study of Salvia Divinorum’s effects using YouTube videos earned him recognition by Wired UK magazine’s feature “25 Big Ideas for 2011.”   Dr. Lange serves as a fellow for the U.S. Department of Education’s Higher Education Center for Alcohol, Drug Abuse, and Violence Prevention, and a panel member for the Substance Abuse Prevention, Center for the Application of Prevention Technologies (CAPT), Science and Service Technical Expert Panel (SSTEP).  He is the Network Addressing Collegiate Alcohol and Other Drug Issues (The Network) California State Coordinator.
